UPDATE (04/21/2011): New version out which fixes a lot of bugs. Go download it!
UPDATE (04/04/2011): I’d like to let everyone know that I have a quite a backlog of issues with this extension that I’m prepared to fix. However, due to other projects taking my time and YouTube changing their site layout every 4 minutes for the last two weeks. I’m going to hold off on updating this site until things calm down at Youtubeland. Probably another week or so.
Feel free to keep reporting the bugs though! I need all the help I can get.
This extension reskins YouTube into a darker and simplified version. Every page including the video, browse, subscription, upload, and search pages is updated to match the style. The navigation fonts and buttons have also been slightly changed for better readability.

Unfortunately, I had to uninstall this program. I noticed something quite peculiar. Initially, it worked flawlessly upon download. There were no discernible “bug’s.” Within a matter of hour’s, I attempted to watch a “Youtube” video. Quickly did I discover that, by utilizing this awesome extension, I was unable to pause, play, or maximize the Youtube video. Somehow, this extension interferes with the mechanic’s of “Youtube.” Hopefully this if remedied soon as this is an exceptionally and aesthetically pleasing extension. Congratulation’s to you and I will be checking daily for it’s remedy.

Thanks for letting me know.
Can you tell me which operation system you’re using and which particular video you’re having trouble with?
It’s very unusual for the problem to persist even after uninstalling the extension since uninstalling it completely deletes it.

I tried this extension which looked great and was allot easier on the eyes but when it is enabled some videos that I subscribe to with heavily customized pages would not display the playing video unless I scrolled it off screen and back. Could it also have something to do with the fact I have plug in content set to not autoload (ie I get the big pale play button where the player or banner is)?
I am on 32bit XP Pro with no swap file. oh I’ll just paste my system specs.

WolvenSpectre,
I’m happy that you like the extension. I’ve opened both of the links that you posted and those videos and channels seem to be working fine even with custom styling.
“Could it also have something to do with the fact I have plug in content set to not autoload ”
That’s possible. Have you tried changing this setting to see if the problem disappears?
If that doesn’t work, it’s possible that another addon or userscript is conflicting with Youtube Dark so I would recommend turning them off one by one to see if you can narrow down the problem.
Good luck!

Hi Mustafa,
I like the extension a lot, but I have one issue with it. YouTube comments initially display fine, but if you click the “See all” link under a YouTube video to see all of the comments, the comments are displayed in black text on an almost black background, making them unreadable. When you mouse over a comment, the background changes colour and the comment becomes readable, but obviously this is far from ideal.
Here’s a pic to show you what I mean: -
http://img543.imageshack.us/img543/3585/clipboard02qb.jpg
Here I’m mousing over the top comment and you can see that the background is lighter than it is for the other comments, which can’t be read.
This happened with Opera 11 and it also occurs in Opera 11.01. I’m running Windows 7 Pro if that makes any difference. This occurs on all videos.
Many thanks for your work in making this extension.
Steve.

Hi Steve,
Thanks for the bug report. I’m working on an overhaul of the extension because Youtube (once again) has changed their layout. The overhaul should fix a lot of these issues.
Expect it within the next week.
Regards,
~Mustafa

Hello again,
I just installed the new update and it’s a really nice improvement over the version 1.x. I haven’t had much chance to test it yet, but my initial thoughts are – great! Many thanks for continued development of this extension.

So i just downloaded your newest update and now when i play youtube videos the picture is squished into the left half of the youtube player and the right half is all black. Any idea why?!?!
Wednesday, March 16th 2011 at 11:28 pm |
I’ll be honest with you; I have no idea.
My extension works through only “CSS” styles and those should not have any effect on flash videos.
Do you have any other youtube extensions installed?
Thursday, March 17th 2011 at 3:24 pm |
Youtube Ads free and downloader. But i had the youtube black before you just updated it and it was fine. Is there a way i could get the older version again?
Thursday, March 17th 2011 at 5:00 pm |
You can install the older 2.3 version from here:
https://addons.opera.com/addons/extensions/details/youtube-dark-simplified/2.3/?display=en
However, I think Opera auto updates to the newest version eventually.
Can you post a screenshot of what the bug looks like?

Hello! I tested the plugin and works pretty great…
But I noticed one thing, you can’t scroll the progress bar for where you want (showing the video part above)… You need to click play, and start scrolling…
Can you fix that? I use a lot

It seems YouTube have changed some code again. When you type something into the search box, the text is in black – the same colour as the background, so you can’t see what you’re typing. The YouTube logo at the top of the page is also blacked out. There may be other changes too, but that’s all I’ve noticed for now. I’d have to disable the extension for the time being, but hopefully it can be updated again. Thanks for all the hard work!

I’d like to second that thanks for all the hard work, this extension is really amazing for people that spend a lot of their time on YouTube like I do.

Thanks for letting me know! Expect a fix sometime by the end of this week.

Hello again,
Thanks for the updated version, but there is a new bug. When typing something into the search box, when you type each letter, the screen bounces down a little and then back up again. This happens with each key press. It seems to relate to YouTube reloading with each key press to provide the list of possible search terms.
Thanks again,
Steve.

Hmmm, I can’t seem to replicate the bug. Which browser are you using?
Monday, April 25th 2011 at 11:53 pm |
I’m using Opera 11.10.
I recorded a short video of the bug, which you can download here: -
http://www.multiupload.com/Z2RNCL5G4G
The video isn’t the best quality, but you can clearly see the screen bounce with each key press.
Also, it’s not just happening when typing in the search box. If I use the scroll wheel on my mouse to move up and down the page, it happens then too and you can see the screen jerking as it bounces up and down instead of scrolling smoothly.
I have 2 other extensions installed in Opera, both of which relate to YouTube (a pop-up ad blocker and a video downloader), but I have tried disabling both of them in case there’s some kind of conflict, but it makes no difference. When I disable your extension, the bouncing/jerky scrolling goes away, so it seems to point to it being that.
Thanks again!
Steve.

What a weird bug. Are you using OSX or Windows?

“What a weird bug. Are you using OSX or Windows?”
I’m using the 32 bit version of Windows 7 Professional. All patches are up to date, as is Flash and all the other software I use (AFAIK).

Hi!
There is a problem with this bar I think: http://files.myopera.com/Emoryy/screenshots/2011-05-09_213845.png
The other thing: I am using YousableTubeFix, This userscript is able to resize the video player to given size. I am using it with the option “full”, which resizes the player to full width, but the player is misaligned when your extension is active.
screenshot: http://files.myopera.com/Emoryy/screenshots/2011-05-09_213737.png
Is it possible to make the extension compatible?
Thursday, May 12th 2011 at 11:48 pm |
Thanks for letting me know. I just fixed the bar and a few other things in this latest update. The Opera extensions site should have the update within a day or two.
As for the YousableTubeFix, I’ll take a look but I’m not I can make my extension compatible with it, but I will give it a try.
Tuesday, May 17th 2011 at 12:08 pm |
Thanks!
I’ve got the “YouWatch” Opera extension too, which adds an extra button to the top bar. With this button the content was too wide before, and the search field was wrapped to an another line (It’s visible on my screenshot). It seems that this is fixed now too.
I have a somewhat big monitor now, so watching videos in bigger width would be nice (with YousableTubeFix).
I’ve examined the code of Youtube (with your ext. activated) with Dragonfly, and I had to change two elements values. Namely I set the width of #content and #watch-video to 100%, and it seems to work fine, the player is aligned to the center if it’s set to wider, and no other parts of the layout is messed up, or anything like that.
So I think that you have to change only these, to make it compatible with YousableTubeFix.
Other thing I noticed, that on your screenshot the buttons under the player and the description box have rounded borders. But not for me.
Is this a thing that you have changed, or is this an error?
Thanks again!

I wondered why your extension takes up so much time to load every time. Then I noticed that it is requesting something from userstyles.org. I looked into your code, and found that you inject the stylesheet indeed from there.
I don’t think that it is a good idea to do so. Their server is quite slow.
But I understand why you did it (to be able to change the style more easily and faster) Maybe you could host it somewhere else?
But I downloaded the css, and applied it directly in Opera. Now it loads instantly
One tip: you can embed the used images with inline base64 coding into the css, so you don’t need to rely on imgur.com

the font colors are messed up

Just wanted to leave a little input. I’m using Google Chrome and a few things are a little messed up graphically, but other than that, this runs great, and I’m glad to have found this. I was growing tired of having to strain my eyes to watch a YouTube video..
I’ve explained the problems in this image:

Thanks for reading, and thanks for the nice extension.
